Q: To which city must I fly?
A: Pretoria shares the international airport with Johannesburg (airport code JNB). From that airport, it is a 40 minute drive to Pretoria. Virtually every airline flying to South Africa has flights to Johannesburg, and sometimes also to Cape Town. South Africa is a large country, and driving to Pretoria from Durban is more than 6 hours, from Cape Town more than 16 hours.

Q: Do I need a visa to visit South Africa?
A: Most people with passports from the US, Canada, Western Europe, and much of Asia do not need visas if there intended stay is under 3 months; everyone should confirm with their travel agent or South African consulate. In any case, your passport should be valid for 6 months beyond the end of your intended stay in South Africa.

Q: Do I need to take any preventive medication against malaria?
A: The Pretoria and the Johannesburg area are NOT malaria zones and if this is the only area you're visiting you do not need to take any preventive medication against malaria. If you plan to visit any areas that are within malaria zones (e.g. Kruger National Park) during your stay in South Africa, however, you should take the necessary precautions. Check with your doctor or your South African consulate whether the areas you intend to visit are malaria zones. Prophylatics or preventive medication for malaria such as Paludrine/Daramal are available at local pharmacies without prescription.
